Established by Australian naturalist David Fleay in 1952, the park is home to many native animals, which are displayed in surroundings similar to their natural habitats. Managed by the Environmental Protection Agency, the park aims to raise community awareness about the need to protect native animals, especially rare and threatened species. The park has a long tradition of breeding native animals and also includes an animal hospital for sick, injured and orphaned animals.

The sanctuary was opened as the Currumbin Bird Sanctuary by Alex Griffiths in 1947 as a scheme to stop the local lorikeet population destroying his flower plantations. The lorikeets still flock to the sanctuary twice daily to be fed by visitors. The sanctuary now houses one of the largest collections of Australian native species in the world and the largest walk-through aviary in the Southern Hemisphere.

The TreeTop Challenge has two adventure locations on the Gold Coast – on Mount Tamborine and inside Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary. The first chamber is the ‘presentation cave’ where visitors are be shown an audio-visual display on the glow worms. This chamber is complete with realistic formations such as stalagmites and stalactites, water features and flow stone. From this stunning cave, visitors are guided through the magical glow worm cave  filled with thousands of glow worms.

The Hinze Dam is a rock and earth-fill embankment dam with a spillway across the Nerang River in the Gold Coast Hinterland. The resulting lake and its surroundings is a popular recreational facility for walking, electric or manual-powered boating, fishing, biking and horse riding. An interpretive centre was opened in 2011, along with new parking, walking trails, toilet facilities and barbecue areas.

The Natural Bridge is a naturally formed rock arch over Cave Creek, a tributary of the Nerang River. The bridge is in the territory of the local Kombumerri aboriginal people (a family group of the Yugambeh language peoples). The cave is home to a colony of glow worms (larvae of the insect Arachnocampa flava) and commercial operators lead night tours into the cave. Swimming is no longer permitted in order to protect the glow worm habitat. Access is from the Nerang-Murwillumbah Road.
